Pe 6 mai 1937, zeppelinul 129 Hindenburg a luat foc și a ars la sosirea la Lakehurst, lângă New York. Acesta fusese umplut cu 200.000 m³ de hidrogen din cauza embargoului impus de SUA care interzicea exportul de heliu către Germania nazistă.
